Allianz’s story in Asia began more than a hundred years ago. Today, Allianz serves the needs of over 22 million customers, across multiple distribution channels in the region. Some of the highlights on our journey so far …

1951
Allianz Ayudhya is established in Thailand.

1981
Allianz enters the Asian market with an affiliate in Jakarta and the founding of the subsidiary, Allianz Insurance Pte. Ltd., in Singapore.

1989
Allianz sets up a P & C company in Indonesia.

1991
Allianz becomes the first European insurer to open a legally autonomous property insurance subsidiary, Allianz Fire and Marine Insurance Japan Ltd., in Tokyo.

1995
Allianz Life Insurance in Taiwan is founded.

1996 
Allianz sets up a Life and Health Insurance company in Indonesia. Opening of the regional office of Allianz Asia Pacific in Singapore headed by Michael Diekmann.

1997
Allianz commenced operations in China, which was a historic moment for Allianz, as it was the first foreign life insurance company allowed to work in China since 1949.

2001
Allianz establishes a JV in India offering life and non-life insurance products. Allianz officially commences operations in Malaysia as it becomes the controlling shareholder of Allianz General Insurance Malaysia Berhad (AGIM).

2012 

Allianz signs an exclusive long-term pan-Asian bancassurance partnership with HSBC.

2013
All 12 Allianz entities move into new premises at Asia Square Tower 2 in Singapore.

2014 
George Sartorel is appointed as Regional CEO, Allianz Asia-Pacific.

2015

Allianz enters the Philippines with an acquisition of 51% in PNB Life Insurance and an exclusive 15-year bancassurance partnership with Philippine National Bank (PNB).

2016 
Launch of Allianz Asia Lab, its first dedicated advanced data analytics and innovation hub in Asia to build the next business model for insurance.

2017

Allianz and Standard Chartered Bank announce 15-year general insurance partnership in Asia.

Allianz announces multi-year pan-regional partnership with the Asia Football Confederation.

Allianz reaches agreement to sell a part of its traditional life insurance portfolio to China Life Insurance Co.

2018

Allianz Lanka completes acquisition of Janashakthi General Insurance Limited in Sri Lanka.

Allianz and JD.com enter into long-term partnership to develop a digital insurance JV in China.

Allianz receives approval from the Chinese regulator for the preparatory establishment of an insurance holding company in China – the country’s first-ever wholly-owned insurance holding company by a foreign insurer.

2019

Solmaz Altin named Regional Chief Executive Officer, Allianz Asia Pacific, succeeding George Sartorel.

Allianz announces intention to enter the general insurance sector in Vietnam through a digital JV with the FPT Group.

Allianz and Sri Ayudhya Capital PCL complete the expansion of its strategic partnership in Thailand.

2020

Allianz opens Allianz China Insurance Holding, China’s first fully foreign-owned insurance holding company.

Allianz partners AEON Financial Service to form a life insurance JV in Japan.

2021

Allianz receives regulatory approval for the establishment of Allianz Insurance Asset Management Co., Ltd. in China – the country’s first wholly foreign-owned insurance asset management company.

Anusha Thavarajah named Regional Chief Executive Officer, Allianz Asia Pacific, succeeding Solmaz Altin.

Allianz China Life receives regulatory approval to become the first wholly foreign-owned life insurance company in China developed from a JV.

2022

Allianz Ayudhya completes acquisition of Aetna Thailand in Thailand.

Allianz renews strategic bancassurance partnership with HSBC in Asia for an additional 15 years.

2023

Allianz announces partnership with INSEAD to develop a training and certification program.

Allianz has a strong regional network across Asia, and a regional office in Singapore’s Marina Bay financial district. Allianz services are offered in 15 countries across the region.
